Cumbria Choice

Step 2 - Choosing

How to find out about available properties

Properties are advertised in the following ways:

  • On our website, go to Property Search
  • In news sheets at all the Local Authority and housing organisations offices.
  • Contact the housing organisations offices if you require help to find out about available properties. For contact details go to Partner Landlords

Properties are advertised on a weekly cycle from Thursday to midnight on the following Tuesday.  There are no property adverts on Wednesdays.

Adverts contain information about the property to help you make the right choice.  For example the advert will tell you who is eligible i.e. household type, age restrictions i.e. over 60s and if the property is subject to a local lettings policy i.e. you need a local connection.

Property of the week - this is a property that has been advertised before and not been offered.  All applicants will be eligible to 'Bid' for the property and it will then be offered to the person who has been on the housing register the longest and is most suited in terms of household type.

A range of symbols are used to tell you about the property.

 1 Bed  2 Bed

The number of bedrooms in the property

The property advertised is sheltered or
extra care sheltered housing
 Minimum age  Maximum age
The minimum or maximum age that an applicant must be to apply for the property (age restriction will be displayed within the icon when viewed on the Property website or the Newsletter)

The property has a garden

Off road parking is available at the property

The property is wheelchair accessible or has been adapted and priority will be given to households assessed as needing these adaptations

Expressing Your Interest in a Property (known as Bidding)

To apply for a property you must tell us that you wish to be considered for it by placing a 'Bid'.

You can only 'Bid' for a property that is suitable for your family size.  Click Step 1 - Registration for the maximum number of bedrooms that you are entitled to.

If you try to 'Bid' for a property and you are not eligible you will be told the reason why.  For example you may be ineligible because of your household type i.e you are a family with one child and the property is only suitable for a single person.

You can express your interest or 'Bid', in one of the following ways:

  • Online through our website.
  • Contact a housing provider on the general office number. For contact details go to Partner Landlords
  • In person at the Offices of a housing provider.
  • Using the automated telephone line and calling 0300 011 2160.
  • Sending an SMS Text Message to 07537 402596.

You may bid for a maximum of 3 properties during each weekly cycle.
